Let’s Clear Things Up

There seems to be some confusion between us and other Taekwondo schools here in Nanaimo. We are located in Nanaimo at 2301 McCullough Road, Compartment “F”. Our Grand Master’s name is Gil Woo Kim – Liaison to the Kukkiwon Central Gymnasium in Seoul Korea and three-time former President of the B.C. Taekwondo Federation.

Woo Kim Nanaimo has been established in this area for over 30 years. We teach “World Taekwondo Style” and are a non-profit society. This means that the club is run by the members for the members. Because of this we are able to keep our fees low and our class times more flexible.

About Our Classes

The Woo Kim Nanaimo Taekwondo School is a non-profit society for the furthering of the martial art of Taekwondo. The school is sanctioned by the British Columbia World Taekwondo Federation under the technical direction of Grand Master Gil Woo Kim. Local Nanaimo classes are instructed by Master Steve Large. Although hand techniques similar to Karate are used, the accent with Taekwondo is always on the kicks which makes it stand out as one of the more dynamic martial arts. Taekwondo is a recognized Olympic sport with millions of practitioners world wide.

We are presently accepting registration on an ongoing basis for all ages of students from 6 years old and up. The school is now open each night from 6:00pm to 8:30pm in the Belfor Building, Compartment “F”, 2301 McCullough Road Nanaimo.

We do not have special starter classes so students can feel free to join any time. At the present time there is no limitation to the amount of days during the week that a student can attend any class that is appropriate for their age group. We recommend that students attend classes at least 2 to 3 times during the week.

Regular Adult Classes

These classes are a mixture of cardio, traditional martial arts and partner exercises. Although some sport Taekwondo is involved in our curriculum, the school is more focused on strong traditional technique, self-defense, and the proper execution of forms and basics. Some of the time in class is also spent in learning aspects of Korean language and rules of conduct known as the Taekwondo tenets. The aim is to build strength, self-confidence, and flexibility while getting in shape and learning.

Junior Classes

Regular juniors classes are from 6 to 12 years of age. The juniors classes are geared in a similar fashion to the adult classes with an accent on self-control and mutual respect for instructors and fellow classmates. There are games that are played from time to time to help boost confidence and a spirit of teamwork. Although some individual attention is given, the atmosphere is more group oriented.
